What is the Meaning of Life?

And why are we here?

Written by Living Dialog on 28/09/2021

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:16

God made people to love Him with all their hearts, minds and souls and to love each other in the same way as we love ourselves. We were created foremost to bring glory to God, be in the right relationship to Him, and worship Him. We are here on earth to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. For those who are Christians, life means honoring God with your life, your work and through the enjoyment of God’s presence. God’s presence comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Beyond what you could ever dream or imagine, life's greatest adventure is to discover God’s exciting plan for your life and pursue it with a passion.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8) A different Bible version says it this way: “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love. And don’t take yourself too seriously — take God seriously.”  Micah 6:8 (MSG)

According to this verse, God has made some general plans for our lives plain.

Do what is fair and right to your neighbor (Do justice)

It is the poor and weak (not the rich and powerful) who usually need someone to stand up for them. In Psalm 82:3, God tells us “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.” And in Deuteronomy 10:18, “He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.”

Remember that while we were still weak, Christ died for us! (Romans 5:6). So think, who needs you to stand up for them today, to defend and help and provide for them? Help them in Jesus’ name because He first helped us.

Be compassionate and loyal in your love (Love kindness)

"We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother." (1 John 4:19-21) God mercifully, kindly, generously has loved us. Jesus illustrated kindness in the story about the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:29-37) In it, a couple of religious leaders passed by a man who had been beaten by robbers and left for dead. They couldn't be bothered to help the poor man, but a foreigner (a despised Samaritan) had compassion on him, took him to an inn, treated his wounds and paid for the robbed man's stay there. Jesus said "Go, and do likewise." (Luke 10:37

Who do you know who needs compassion?  They may even be someone you don't like or with whom you don't want to be involved.  What could you do today to show God's kindness to them?

And don’t take yourself too seriously — take God seriously (walk humbly with your God)

What group of people do you know who don't take themselves too seriously? Children! When Jesus talked about faith and humility He used a child as an example: "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:4) Be like a child with a Father who loves you. Walk beside Him, tell Him everything, trust Him. Look to Him for direction and help. Galatians 4:6 tells us "And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, 'Abba! Father!'” — in other words “Daddy!  Father!”

Why are you here? Because God wants you here, to walk humbly with Him. He wants you to humbly accept His salvation, because Jesus paid in full for our sins that had separated us from God. He wants you to know Him, forever. He wants you to love Him and know His love and share His love.

Pray this week:

Lord, thank You for creating me. I want to know the full extent of Your love and share Your kindness with others. Direct me today, I pray.

Is it a struggle for you to trust God? Can a caring volunteer help you with that?
