Jesus promises us eternal life in heaven

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die…

John 11:25-26

I didn’t know if the turkey or I was more stuffed. I cleared the dishes from the table and pulled out a variety of pies. “Dessert anyone?”

“I’ll never eat again,” my friend said. “I’m so very full.”

“Never say never,” I said.

In fact, none of us should ever say never. We don’t know what life will bring, how situations might turn out or even how our outlook might change.

But there is the One who said never. And when He said it, eternity opened up shining with joy. When He said never, our lives changed. Our tomorrows became lovely. And by saying never, He revealed the secret to our future was immensely beautiful.

Here’s where Jesus said never:

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die…” (John 11:25-26)

No matter what your government does, how your country changes, how the world turns dark, how much violence we face, or what problems keep us awake at night, none of that matters because Jesus said never.

Our body may wither. We may take our last breath. Our heart may stop beating. But it’s not the end. Jesus uttered the word. His promise is that our spirit never dies. And yes, we can say never. And we can also say that heaven awaits us always.

Do you believe in Christ in order to be part of His never promise?

Want to know what eternal life in heaven will be like? Below are commentaries about heaven drawn from the Bible:

Question: How does the Bible describe the glorified bodies we will possess in heaven?

Answer: While the Bible doesn’t describe in detail the glorified bodies we will receive in heaven, we know that they will be like that of Jesus’ resurrected body. Our human bodies are described in 1 Corinthians 15:42-53 as perishable, dishonorable and weak, all due to sin. Our glorified bodies in eternity will be imperishable, honorable and powerful.

Just as our earthly bodies are perfectly suited to life on earth, our resurrected bodies will be the same for life in heaven. We will have form and solidity to the touch, yet with no hindrance to travel (John 20:19, 26; Luke 24:39).

We will be able to enjoy food, but will not be driven to it by necessity for nourishment nor fleshly desire (Luke 24:40–43).

And like Moses and Elijah, we will be able to bathe in the glory of our Maker in the fellowship of His dear Son (Matthew 17:2–3; Philippians 3:10).

The bodies we inherit will be more like what God had originally made us to be, rather than what we now abide in through the weakness of our sinful flesh. We will be glorified with Christ, and that glory will extend to the bodies we will inhabit.

Believer, let me tell you who you are: you are current possessor of eternal life, beloved for Christ's sake, sealed by His Holy Spirit, destined to "sit down in the Kingdom with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" (Matthew 8:12) never to perish or be snatched away from His grip (John 10:27-30).

Pray this week:

Dear Lord,

Thank you for your promise of eternal life and for saying ‘never’ to death. We stand in great joy before you and praise you for your goodness. Help us believe this day and give us the boldness to share your Good News with our friends and family so that they can join us in eternity with You.

Amen.
